INSPIRATION

When I visited ‘Hyakuban’ at work, I was shocked to see its damaged state, and felt a sense of duty to ‘pass the skills and wisdom’ of our predecessors who poured their heart and soul in this piece of architecture. Incidentally, the “Shuri Castle Fire” had occurred around this time and as I saw the images of the castle on TV which continued to burn, the news reporter explained that there was very little data or accurate drawings needed for a full reconstruction, and restoring the castle to its former shape was extremely difficult. Our business partner abroad had also inquired about ‘Hyakuban’ as we had previously mentioned it in conversation. They were eager to find out more detailed information on the architectural structure of the building, but were left frustrated as most of the resources were partial and only available in Japanese. These coincidental incidents made me realize the importance of capturing architecture with VR (Virtual Reality). If Shuri Castle had invested in VR data, it would have been a powerful asset for its reconstruction. Although ‘Hyakuban’ is considered one of the most important buildings which conveys “the culture and history of the common people”, it does not yet offer anydata in the form of VR. VR data must be created, and it should also offer detailed explanations in English so the information is not restricted to Japan. It was the moment when we realised the mission of Stage Creation.
